Beginners trying these methods for knitting stitches should use plastic knitting needles and a yarn of medium weight. For flat work, a couple of knitting needles are needed. For circular work, at least three are required unless you utilize a circular needle.
How to Cast on
Create a slip loop over the left needle and pass the right needle in the loop from left to right. Now yarn over and under the right needle. Now pull the yarn through the loop. Move the loop to the left needle.
You can do this by putting the left needle in the loop beginning from the right. Keep repeating this until you get the needed number of stitches on the left.
How to Cast on Method II
Those new to knitting stitches can also try this technique. Create a slip loop 30” from the end of the yarn. Slide it on a needle. Hold the needle with your right hand.
Make a loop with your left hand using the yarn’s short end. With the long end, gather the yarn below and above the needle. Pull it through the loop. Fasten the short end with your left hand.
Basics of Knitting
Insert the right needle in the loop on the left needle. This should be done from left to right. Yarn below and above the right needle. Pull it through. Let the first stitch slip. Repeat the process until there are no more stitches on the left needle.
How to Purl
The next step to knitting stitches is to purl. Place the yarn on the needle’s front. Put the right hand needle in the left hand needle’s loop (from right to left). Pass the yarn at the back of the right needle from right to left. Pull it backwards through the loop. Let the stitch slip off.
Increasing Stitches
This is done by stitching regularly but not letting the stitch slip from the left needle. Next, knit a stitch at the back of this stitch. Now let the stitch slip off.
There are times when you are knitting stitches that decreasing may be needed. Do this by knitting a couple of stitches together. To decrease around the edges, knit the second and third stitches.
To Bind off
Knit a couple of stitches in the manner described earlier. Let the first stitch slip above the second. Knit another stitch. Repeat this until a single stitch remains. Break off the yarn and draw it in the loop.
Work Ribbing
Start by casting on multiples of four stitches and knit a couple of stitches. Put the yarn on the front. Purl a couple of stitches. Get the yarn from below the needle and put it in the back and repeat from the row’s end.
Knitting stitches can be difficult if the proper methods are not used. For this reason, you need to get familiar with the basic ways for casting on and purling. Through patient practice your skills will improve and you can start using other needles and yarns.
